The best breaking news apps in 2026

A good breaking news app tells you what happened, gets it right, and lets you decide how often it interrupts you. These are the ones worth the space on your lock screen.

For breaking news, start with AP News: it is free, has no paywall, and lets you pick the topics that trigger alerts. Reuters is the pick for markets, BBC News and The New York Times for global live coverage, and your local TV station's app for news and weather near you. Turn alerts on in one or two apps, not all of them. Newsreel is not an alert app; it is where vetted journalists explain the story after the alert. Full disclosure: we built Newsreel.

Speed or accuracy?

Every breaking news app trades a little of one for the other. The first alert on a big story carries the least information it will ever have. Details change in the first hours: numbers, names, causes. Most of the apps below come from newsrooms that update stories as facts change, and several run live pages that show what is confirmed and what is still unclear.

We don't rank these apps by speed. No public test we trust measures that. Instead, we looked at what each app lets you control: which topics trigger an alert, how you turn them off, and what you pay. Every price and feature below comes from the app's own store listing or help pages as of November 2026.

The best breaking news apps

AP News

FreeWire serviceTopic alerts

The Associated Press app is free and has no paywall. It sends breaking news alerts as big stories develop, and you can set notifications around the topics you follow so you only hear about what you care about. It also carries local news from other trusted sources, in English and Spanish. The app does show ads.

Best for: a free, plain wire-service alert you can trust before anyone has spun the story.

Reuters

Free downloadSubscription for full accessWatchlist

The other big wire service. Its push alerts are customizable, and you can opt in to podcast alerts separately. Markets readers can build a watchlist and follow companies for breaking news. The app is free to download, but full access in many countries needs an in-app subscription.

Best for: world, business and markets alerts tied to the companies you follow.

BBC News

Free download$8.99/mo in the USLive coverage

The BBC app runs live coverage pages for big stories and can stream the BBC News channel. Breaking news alerts are a simple on or off choice, and you can also turn them off in your phone's notification settings. In the US, a paid plan costs $8.99 a month or $89.99 a year and unlocks unlimited news, the live channel and documentaries.

Best for: a global view of breaking stories with few, simple alerts.

The New York Times

Free first monthPaid subscriptionCustom alerts

The Times app sends push alerts for breaking news and lets you add custom alerts and widgets. You can also get updates for coverage areas such as politics, arts and science. New app users get a month of free news access with no credit card. After that, you need a subscription.

Best for: breaking alerts that lead into deep reporting and live updates.

CNN

Free downloadFrom $3.99/moLive updates

CNN's app lets you set custom alerts to follow developing stories. Its live update articles change as news comes in, and you can watch video of the story as it unfolds. In-app subscriptions start at $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year, and an All Access plan costs $6.99 a month.

Best for: following one developing story minute by minute.

Apple News

FreeNews+ $12.99/moApple devices only

Apple's own news app. You choose which channels may send you notifications, plus Apple News Top Stories and Spotlight alerts. That lets you mix several outlets in one alert stream. The base app is free, News+ costs $12.99 a month, and there is no Android version.

Best for: iPhone users who want alerts from a few chosen outlets in one place.

Your local TV station's app

Varies by stationLocal alertsWeather

For news near you, a local station app often beats any national app. NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth, for example, lets you set alerts by location for breaking news, tornado warnings, heat advisories, public safety and transit. Its app is free on the App Store. Many local stations run similar apps, so search for yours.

Best for: local breaking news and severe weather where you live.

How to set up breaking news alerts without the flood

Pick one national app and one local app for alerts. Inside each, follow only the topics you care about. Then use your phone's own settings to mute or bundle everything else. Five minutes of setup saves a lot of buzzing.

  1. Choose your alert apps. Two is plenty. A wire service such as AP News or Reuters for national and world news, plus a local station app for weather and news near you. Turn off notifications in every other news app you keep.
  2. Set topics inside each app. AP News lets you set alerts around the topics you follow. Reuters lets you follow companies on a watchlist. Apple News lets you choose channel by channel: open Following, scroll down, and tap Notifications & Email. Local station apps often let you choose alert types by location.
  3. On iPhone, use Scheduled Summary. Go to Settings, then Notifications, then Scheduled Summary, and add the apps you want bundled into a digest at set times. Leave your one main alert app on Immediate Delivery. In each app's notification settings you can also turn Time Sensitive Notifications on or off, if the app supports it.
  4. On Android, trim by category. Go to Settings, then Notifications, then App notifications, and tap the app. Many apps split alerts into categories, so you can keep breaking news and turn off the rest.
  5. Read past the alert before you share. Open the live page or full story, check when it was last updated, and wait for a second outlet to confirm big claims. Early details can change.

An alert tells you that something happened. It rarely tells you why it matters or what people disagree about. That part takes a second step, and it is the step most news apps skip.

After the alert, read the people who explain it

Newsreel is a news platform for people who have given up on the news. Vetted journalists and subject-matter experts publish directly, with no ads and no engagement-bait algorithm. Perspectives gathers the actual arguments on a contested story. $5.99 a month, or $49.99 a year.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best app for breaking news?

For most people, AP News is a strong first pick. It is free, has no paywall, and lets you set alerts around the topics you follow. Add Reuters if you follow markets, and add your local TV station's app for news and weather near you. One national app plus one local app covers most needs.

What is the best free app for unbiased breaking news?

No app is free of editorial judgment, but wire services write in a plain, factual style. AP News is free with no paywall. Reuters is free to download, though full access in many countries needs a subscription. Apple News is free and lets you take alerts from several outlets at once, so no single outlet frames every story.

How do I stop getting too many news alerts?

Keep breaking alerts on for one or two apps and turn them off everywhere else. Inside each app, follow only the topics you care about. On iPhone, go to Settings, then Notifications, and use Scheduled Summary to bundle less urgent apps into a digest. On Android, go to Settings, then Notifications, then App notifications, and turn off the categories you don't want.

Is Newsreel a breaking news app?

No. Newsreel does not send breaking news alerts. It is where vetted journalists and subject-matter experts explain what a story means once the alert has landed, and its Perspectives feature gathers the actual arguments on a contested story. It costs $5.99 a month or $49.99 a year.
