NEW YORK, NY — Newsreel, the interactive news platform built for digital-first audiences, today announced a content partnership with OpenSecrets, the nation’s premier nonpartisan nonprofit tracking money in American politics. Under the agreement, OpenSecrets’ award-winning reporting will be adapted into Newsreel’s swipeable, interactive format and distributed to the Newsreel audience.
The partnership comes at a moment when trust in political institutions is low and young Americans are increasingly tuning out traditional news. Newsreel was built on the premise that the problem isn’t that people don’t care about what’s happening — it’s that the formats used to tell them aren’t built for how they consume information. OpenSecrets’ reporting on dark money, lobbying, and campaign finance is exactly the kind of accountability journalism that matters to this generation. It just hasn’t been reaching them.
“OpenSecrets has spent over 40 years making money in politics legible to the public. We’re building the platform to get that work in front of the people who will inherit this political system. That felt like a natural place to start.”
Jack Brewster, CEO, Newsreel Media Corp.
Under the pilot, Newsreel will adapt OpenSecrets’ published editorial stories into its interactive slide format using AI-assisted summarization and editorial review, preserving the substance and sourcing of the original reporting while making it accessible on mobile. All content will credit OpenSecrets as the original source and link back to the full story.
“Most political journalism was designed for readers who already know why it matters. We built Newsreel’s format to solve that problem. Short, swipeable, with interactive elements that pull you into the story instead of assuming you’re already there. OpenSecrets’ reporting is some of the most important accountability journalism being produced right now. Getting it into a format that actually works on a phone, for someone scrolling at 11pm, is exactly what this platform was made for.”
Brijesh Tiwari, CTO, Newsreel Media Corp.
“OpenSecrets has always believed that transparency about money in politics is only as powerful as the audience it reaches. Newsreel gives our data and reporting a path to a generation that has every reason to care about this critical information. We’re excited to partner with platforms that share our work in ways that resonate with how people engage and understand information today.”
Hilary Braseth, Executive Director, OpenSecrets
