New York, Illinois, Colorado and Connecticut require a school to tell parents what an online service collects about their child. This page is written so a school can publish it as it stands.
An email address, so the student can sign in. If the school prefers, students can use a class access code instead and give no email at all.
Reading activity: which stories a student opened, how long they spent, and their answers to the quiz and poll on each story. Teachers see this for their own class. It is how a teacher knows who completed an assignment.

No date of birth. No home address. No phone number. No photograph. No GPS or device location. No grades or records from the school's own systems. Newsreel does not connect to a student information system.
Newsreel uses it to run the service for that school and for nothing else. Specifically, Newsreel does not use student information to improve or develop its products, for research, to train artificial intelligence models, or in any consumer Newsreel product. It is not sold, licensed, or shared. There is no advertising in Newsreel and no advertising profiles are built. We do not send marketing email to a student account.
Newsreel does not currently collect location from students. If a school turns on a feature that shows local news, a student's location defaults to the postal code of the school itself, not the student's home. A school can turn this off, and Newsreel will not enable it until the location data is added to the school's data privacy agreement.
While the student's account is active, then deleted within 30 days. When a school's subscription ends, all student information is deleted within 30 days.
The companies that run our systems, listed at newsreel.co/subprocessors. None may use student information for their own purposes. All data stays in the United States.

A parent may ask their school to see what Newsreel holds about their child, correct it, have it deleted, or stop further collection. The school passes the request to us and we act within 30 days. Parents can also write to us directly at jack@newsreel.co.
Newsreel operates as a school official under FERPA, under the school's direction. Newsreel is responsible for its own compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.
